Digital Mental Health

Most people in the world do not have access to therapy. Advances in technology have the potential to dramatically expand access to evidence-based services. Understanding, evaluating, and developing technology-based interventions could be a major way to expand access to mental health care-- especially for individuals who have traditionally lacked access.

With this in mind, here are some questions that motivate my work:

  • Do online and smartphone-based interventions work? If so, for whom, and under what contexts?

  • Which intervention components or active ingredients are best suited for digital interventions?

  • What are the mechanisms of change of digital mental health interventions?

  • How can we improve engagement and user retention for digital interventions?

  • How should we examine and evaluate popular commercial apps like Headspace and Calm? How do these apps compare to apps developed by academic researchers?
